Joan Hernandez Pijuan (Barcelona, 1931-2005) belongs to a very important generation of postwar painters in Spain. He joined the Group of Paris - conceptual artists interested in international movements - at a time when Spain was culturally, socially, and politically isolated. His paintings are the best example of the elegance, naturalness, and austerity found in the late Barcelona visual arts scene.Always a purist, his objective was to capture the essence of nature. The immense silence of the dry landscape of Aragon (his family homeland) served as an inspiration.Extremely sensitive to media and materials, he chose only the finest handmade Japanese rice papers for his work and his brush strokes imitate those used in Japanese graphic poetry. His use of sophisticated colors synthesize nature. Focused on finding divine truth through painting, he is a spiritual artist..Joan Hernandez Pijuan is a standard name in museum collections and his work is represented by prestigious art galleries worldwide. His former students agree that he had an extraordinary ability as a master. The Instituto Cervantes is opening its new center in downtown Chicago with an exhibition of works on paper by Joan Hernandez Pijuan. Inspired by the Moorish Palace of La Alhambra in Granada, this is one of the last collections by Pijuan.
